Despite occupying such widespread territory, they are sparsely populated in most areas due to declining habitat, deforestation, and poaching. Greater kudus have a narrow body with long legs, and their coats can range from brown/bluish grey to reddish brown. They possess between 4 and 12 vertical white stripes along their torso.

The Grand Canyon (Hopi: Öngtupqa; Yavapai: Wi:kaʼi:la; Navajo: Bidááʼ Haʼaztʼiʼ TsékoohSouthern Paiute language: Paxa’uipi; Spanish: Gran Cañón or Gran Cañón del Colorado) is a steep-sided canyon carved by the Colorado River in Arizona. It is 446 km (277 mi) long, up to 29 km (18 mi) wide and attains a depth of over a mile (1,857 m or 6,093 ft). The canyon and adjacent rim are contained within Grand Canyon National Park, the Kaibab National Forest, Grand Canyon–Parashant National Monument, the Hualapai Indian Reservation, the Havasupai Indian Reservation and the Navajo Nation. The Grand Canyon is a river valley in the Colorado Plateau that exposes uplifted Proterozoic and Paleozoic strata. Between 100,000 and 3 million years ago, volcanic activity deposited ash and lava over the area which at times completely obstructed the river. These volcanic rocks are the youngest in the canyon. The first European known to have viewed the Grand Canyon was García López de Cárdenas from Spain, who arrived in 1540. James Ohio Pattie, along with a group of American trappers and mountain men, may have been the next European to reach the canyon, in 1826.

Until the beginning of the 20th century, the area that covered almost the entire length of what is now called the Jordan Rift Valley, between the southern end of the Sea of Galilee and the Gulf of Aqaba, was considered by this name, and included the valley of the Jordan River between the Sea of Galilee and the Dead Sea, the Dead Sea itself and what is today commonly called the Arava Valley. Currently, the term is restricted only to this southern section. It is 166 km (103 mi) long, from the Gulf of Aqaba to the southern shore of the Dead Sea. The area is drained by several streams of seasonal course, which in some places form gorges.

The Valle de la Luna (Moon Valley) or Ischigualasto Provincial Park is located in the northeast of the Argentine province of San Juan and borders the province of La Rioja to the north. Its altitude with respect to sea level varies between 1,200 m (3,940 ft) and 1,800 m (5,900 ft). It is an area of 2,754 km2 (1,063 sq mi), of great scientific importance, since it protects an important paleontological reserve. It is the only place in the world where the entire Triassic period can be seen uncovered and perfectly differentiated in a complete and orderly manner. The geological formations at this site are estimated to be between 200 and 250 million years old. The place is characterized by having little vegetation and the most varied range of colors in its soils. Being a preserved place (declared a Natural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, on November 29, 2000), visits are restricted and can only be done guided. Due to the large deposits rich in fossils in the Ischigualasto area, this place has attracted the interest of geologists and paleontologists since the 1930s. One of the most important pieces found in the area is the Eoraptor lunensis, a very primitive dinosaur discovered in 1991.

The Pinnacles are limestone formations within Nambung National Park, near the town of Cervantes, Western Australia. The area contains thousands of weathered limestone pillars. Some of the tallest pinnacles reach heights of up to 3.5 m (11.48 ft) above the yellow sand base. The different types of formations include ones which are much taller than they are wide and resemble columns (suggesting the name of Pinnacles) while others are only a meter or so in height and width resembling short tombstones. A cross-bedding structure can be observed in many pinnacles where the angle of deposited sand changed suddenly due to changes in prevailing winds during formation of the limestone beds. The raw material for the limestone of the Pinnacles came from seashells in an earlier era that was rich in marine life. These shells were broken down into lime-rich sands that were blown inland to form high mobile dunes.

The territory of Western Sahara was gradually colonized by Spain since 1860. The first area occupied was the Río de Oro (ادي الذهب), to the south, where in 1884 the city of Villa Cisneros (now Dakhla [الداخلة]) was founded, to which later La Güera (الكويرة‎) and Tiris (part of the Adrar territory, ولاية آدرار, which currently belongs to Mauritania) were annexed. In 1912 the annexation of Saguía el Hamra (الساقية الحمراء) region was agreed with France, where in 1938 the city of El Aaiún (العيون) was founded, which would later become the capital of the entire colony of the Spanish Sahara (الصحراء الإسبانية), relegating Villa Cisneros. The total area of the colony, mostly desert, was about 280,000 km². Its definitive limits were established in the Cintra agreements (April 2, 1958).
In 1968, the Advanced Organization for the Liberation of Saguia el Hamra and Río de Oro, known simply as the Liberation Movement, was founded in the city of Smara (السمارة), which was formally constituted on December 11, 1969 with the aim of achieving the independence from Western Sahara and was outlawed by the Spanish authorities. Later, on May 10, 1973, the Polisario Front (جبهة البوليساريو) was born in Zouérate (الزويرات, Mauritania), ready to fight for independence. Morocco and Mauritania had ambitions to seize the colony, and finally on November 6, 1975 King Hassan II of Morocco organized the so-called Green March, which crossed the internationally recognized border of the Spanish Sahara (which by then had already become a semi-metropolitan province of Spain) to the north. On February 26, 1976, Spain abandoned the territory, after which the Polisario Front proclaimed the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) and launched a war of liberation of the territory, which would finally be annexed to Morocco despite the reluctance of the international community and the United Nations.

In 1975, after eleven years of persistent drought throughout the Sahel, which caused famines and massive emigration, a program against desertification and for the protection of agriculture in the Mopti region was launched through the construction of small reservoirs that allowed the permanent availability of water, the restoration of the water table and, with it, the increase in agricultural and livestock productivity, which led to a decrease in the exodus of the rural population (which represented 72% of the total population of the country). At the same time, the planting of eucalyptus was started to stop desertification. These interventions turned out to be very effective. Similar interventions were carried out in other regions of the country, as Tombouctou, which are also heavily affected by desertification.

Her work allowed the discovery of numerous remains of prehistoric animals under the sands of the Gobi desert, among which that of the first Deinocheirus know and a a Protoceratops and a young Velociraptor entangled in a fight, a position in which they were surprisingly fossilized. Khor Angar (Khôr ʽAngar, in Arabic خور أنغار) is a strategic location on the coast of the Bab el Mandeb, the strait that separates the Red Sea from the Gulf of Aden, in the Arabian Sea (Indian Ocean). It is located in a desert area, very dry and hot, of the Obock region, converted in 1884 into a French colony, which extended to the entire so-called French Coast of the Somalis (French Somaliland). From 1967 the colony was called the French Territory of the Afars and the Issas until June 27, 1977 when the independence of the Republic of Djibouti was proclaimed.
