The Kariba Dam is a double-curved concrete arch dam in the Kariba Gorge of the Zambezi River Basin between Zambia and Zimbabwe. The project was planned and implemented by the Government of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. The dam is 128 m (420 ft) high and 579 m (1,900 ft) long, and it forms Lake Kariba, which stretches for 280 km (170 miles) and contains 185 km3 (150,000,000 acreft) of water. The first phase of the dam (Kariba South) was built between 1955 and 1959. Final construction and the addition of Kariba North Power were not completed until 1977 due to mainly political problems. The creation of the reservoir forced the resettlement of some 57,000 people who lived along the Zambezi on both sides. From 1958 to 1961, Operation Noah captured and removed around 6,000 large and numerous small animals threatened by the rising waters of the lake.

The rebels had the support of South Yemen, the Soviet Union and the People's Republic of China. Eventually, the Omani Armed Forces, with the support of Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Pakistan, and the United Kingdom, defeated Dhorfar guerrillas and the territory rejoined the Sultanate of Oman.

Until the beginning of the 20th century, the area that covered almost the entire length of what is now called the Jordan Rift Valley, between the southern end of the Sea of Galilee and the Gulf of Aqaba, was considered by this name, and included the valley of the Jordan River between the Sea of Galilee and the Dead Sea, the Dead Sea itself and what is today commonly called the Arava Valley. Currently, the term is restricted only to this southern section. It is 166 km (103 mi) long, from the Gulf of Aqaba to the southern shore of the Dead Sea. The area is drained by several streams of seasonal course, which in some places form gorges.

The Soldado Bay (Bahía del Soldado) is located on the western coast of the island of Guanaja, in the archipelago of the Islas de la Bahía, in the Caribbean Sea, north of Honduras. Christopher Columbus arrived on the island, precisely at Soldado beach, on July 30, 1502, during his fourth and last trip to the American continent, and he named it Isla de los Pinos; the island was populated by members of the Pech ethnic group. It was subjected to the Spanish, the English and the Dutch. In 1859 England ceded the archipelago (called Colony of the Bay Islands) to the Republic of Honduras. In 2012, the island was populated by about 4,500 inhabitants.
