Namibia, officially the Republic of Namibia, is a country in Southern Africa. Namibia gained independence from South Africa on March 21, 1990, following the Namibian War of Independence. Part of the territory of present-day Namibia became an integral part of the new Union of South Africa at its creation in 1910. In 1884, the German Empire established rule over most of the territory, forming a colony known as German South West Africa. In 1920, after the end of World War I, the League of Nations mandated administration of the colony to South Africa. As Mandatory power, South Africa imposed its laws, including racial classifications and rules. Since 1948, with the National Party elected to power, this included South Africa applying apartheid to what was then known as South West Africa. The name of the country is derived from the Namib desert, the oldest desert in the world.

It is celebrated in various countries on the African continent, as well as around the world. The organization was transformed into the African Union on July 9, 2002 in Durban, South Africa, but the holiday continues to be celebrated on 25 May. In 1984 OUA Summit was hosted by Cairo (Egypt) and the Africa Day was dedicated to Namibia's struggle for independence (which, however, was not achieved until March 21, 1990).

The name Sesriem is Afrikaans and means "six rawhide thongs", given by settlers on the Dorsland Trek who had to join six such thongs in order for a bucket to reach the water. Sesriem Canyon is only 2 m (6.5 feet) wide in some places, and has a portion that permanently contains water, which many animals use.

The Caprivi Strip is a geographical overhang in the northeast corner of Namibia. It is surrounded by Botswana to the south and Angola and Zambia to the north. Namibia, Botswana and Zambia meet at a single point at the eastern end of the Strip, which is also 100 m from Zimbabwe. The territory was acquired by then German South-West Africa to provide access to the Zambezi River and consequently a route to the German East African coast (its German name is Caprivizipfel). Within Namibia, the Strip is administratively divided between the Kavango East and Zambezi regions. It is crossed by the Kavango River. The Kwando River is part of its border with Botswana and the Zambezi River is part of its border with Zambia. The width of the strip varies from about 32 km (20 mi) to 105 km (65 mi). Its largest settlement is Katima Mulilo, located at the point where the Zambezi River reaches the Strip. Caprivi was named after the German Chancellor Leo von Caprivi, who negotiated the acquisition of the land in 1890 through an exchange with the Great Britain.

The Fish River Canyon (Visrivier Canyon or Visriver Kuil in Afrikaans, Fischfluss Canyon in German), south of present-day Namibia, is the largest canyon in Africa. It features a gigantic ravine, in total about 100 miles (160 km) long, up to 27 km wide and in places almost 550 meters deep. The Fish River is the longest interior river in Namibia. It cuts deep into the plateau which is today dry, stony and sparsely covered with hardy drought-resistant plants. The river flows intermittently, usually flooding in late summer; the rest of the year it becomes a chain of long narrow pools.
