Stromboli is an island in the Tyrrhenian Sea, off the north coast of Sicily, containing Mount Stromboli (926 m or 3,038 ft hight), one of the four active volcanoes in Italy. It is one of the eight Aeolian Islands. The island's area is 12.19 square kilometers (4.7 sq mi), and its population was about 500 as of 2016, managed by the Municipality of Lipari. The volcano has erupted many times and is constantly active with minor eruptions, often visible from many points on the island and from the surrounding sea, giving rise to the island's nickname "Lighthouse of the Mediterranean". Its name is derived from the Ancient Greek name, Στρογγύλη (Strongýlē) which was derived from στρογγύλος (strongýlos, "round"), after the volcano's round, conical appearance when seen from a distance. The geological history of the island of Stromboli begins about 200,000 years ago.

The Flumendosa is a river of southern Sardinia. With a length of 127 km (79 mi), it is the second longest river of the island behind the Tirso. Its springs are located in the Gennargentu massif, at the foot of the Monte Armidda; it flows into the Tyrrhenian Sea. Its path is barred at two different points by massive dams. The first dam, built between 1948 and 1949, forms the Upper Flumendosa Lake. The second dam, built between 1952 and 1958 at the height of the Nuraghe Arrubiu, is used for the production of electricity and irrigation. A 6 km (3.73 mi) long tunnel connects it to the nearby lake Mulargia, where a system of water pipes begins, partly in the tunnel and partly on the surface, which carries water to irrigate the plain at the Campidano di Cagliari and to supplying drinking water to the city of Cagliari and about forty smaller towns.

The Italian Geographical Society (Società geografica italiana) was founded in Florence on May 12, 1867 with the aim of promoting the progress of geographical knowledge, scientific research and the organization of activities and study tours. It is currently based in Rome. The management of the Society corresponds to a board made up of twelve elected members, two vice-presidents and the president, to which are added other members appointed by institutions and public administrations. Its Library, of some 400,000 volumes and 2,000 periodicals, plus some 50,000 modern maps, is one of the most important in the world in its specialty. It also has an ancient collection of maps and atlases published between the 15th and 19th centuries, and an eastern collection containing Chinese and Japanese geographical representations made between the 17th and 19th centuries. To all this we must add a file of around 150,000 photographic images.

Cortina d'Ampezzo (Ladin: Anpezo or Ampëz; Venetian: Cortina d'Anpezo) is a town in the heart of the southern Dolomitic Alps, situated at the foot of Monte Cristallo (3,221 m / 10,568 ft), on the Boite river, in an alpine valley, at an elevation of 1,224 m (4,016 ft) above sea level. Its stable population, in 2017, was 5,842 inhabitants. In October 2007 the population voted to separate from the Veneto region and join the neighboring region, Trentino-Alto Adige / Südtirol due to cultural ties with the Ladino-speaking community in South Tyrol. Cortina d'Ampezzo is an important winter sports center.

The Dolomites (Italian: Dolomiti; Ladin: Dolomites; German: Dolomiten) are a mountain range located in northeastern Italy. They form part of the Southern Limestone Alps. Its main summit is the peak Marmolada, 3,343 m (10,968 ft) above sea level. The Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park and many other regional parks are located in the Dolomites. In August 2009, the Dolomites were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The range is named after the French mineralogist Déodat Gratet de Dolomieu (1750-1801), who was the first to describe the carbonate rock dolomite mineral.

Etna is an active volcano on the east coast of Sicily, in the territory of the Metropolitan City of Catania. It is about 3322 m (10,899 ft) high, although this varies due to constant eruptions: the mountain is currently 21.6 (70.86 ft) lower than it was in 1865. It is the highest active volcano on the Eurasian Plate. and the highest mountain in Italy south of the Alps. Mount Etna has an area of 1,190 km² (459.46 square miles), with a basal circumference of 140 km (87 miles). In June 2013 it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. During the last 2000 years, the activity of Etna has been generally effusive, with occasional explosive eruptions at its summit. The most destructive occurred between March and July 1669 when the town of Nicolosi had to be abandoned. The largest eruptions in recent times occurred in the years 1949, 1971, 1981, 1983 and 1991-1993, 2001, 2002-2003, 2004-2006, 2007, 2008, 2012 and 2021.

Mount Vesuvius (in Italian, Vesuvio; in Neapolitan, 'O Vesuvio or ‘A Muntagna) is a stratovolcano located on the Gulf of Naples, in Campania region, about 9 km (5.6 mi) east of Naples and a short distance from the shore. It consists of a large cone partially encircled by the steep rim of a summit caldera caused by the collapse of an earlier and originally much higher structure. Its height is 1,281 m (4,203 ft). The eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79 destroyed the Roman cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum, Oplontis and Stabiae, as well as several other settlements. It is an active volcano that has erupted numerous times since prehistoric times: the most recent eruptions took place in 1906, 1929 and 1944. The area around Vesuvius was officially declared a national park on June 5, 1995.

The history of what historiography calls the Kingdom of Naples is long and complex. It includes the part of the Italian peninsula to the south of the Papal States. After the War of the Vespers (1282-1302), when the island of Sicily rebelled and was conquered by the Crown of Aragon, the separate Kingdom of Sicily was established. In 1816, it reunited with the mainland and the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies (known as the Kingdom of Naples) was formed, which in 1861 joined the new unified Kingdom of Italy.
