Etna is an active volcano on the east coast of Sicily, in the territory of the Metropolitan City of Catania. It is about 3322 m (10,899 ft) high, although this varies due to constant eruptions: the mountain is currently 21.6 (70.86 ft) lower than it was in 1865. It is the highest active volcano on the Eurasian Plate. and the highest mountain in Italy south of the Alps. Mount Etna has an area of 1,190 km² (459.46 square miles), with a basal circumference of 140 km (87 miles). In June 2013 it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. During the last 2000 years, the activity of Etna has been generally effusive, with occasional explosive eruptions at its summit. The most destructive occurred between March and July 1669 when the town of Nicolosi had to be abandoned. The largest eruptions in recent times occurred in the years 1949, 1971, 1981, 1983 and 1991-1993, 2001, 2002-2003, 2004-2006, 2007, 2008, 2012 and 2021.
