This stamp belongs to the first series of airmail, of fifteen values, issued by the French colony of Madagascar between 1935 and 1938. Postal service began on the island in 1896, when the military regime imposed in 1894 became a regime colonial. The first stamps bear the legend MADAGASCAR ET DEPENDANCES (Madagascar and Dependencies), although overprinted stamps from France was also used. The first permanent air postal service was established on October 31, 1937, when a weekly flight between Tananarive and the south of the island was launched.
