Krakatoa, also transcribed Krakatau (Indonesian: Krakatau), is a caldera in the Sunda Strait between the islands of Java and Sumatra in the Indonesian province of Lampung. The caldera is part of a volcanic island group (Krakatoa archipelago) comprising four islands. Two, Lang and Verlaten, are remnants of a previous volcanic edifice destroyed in eruptions long before the famous 1883 eruption; another, Rakata, is the remnant of a much larger island destroyed in the 1883 eruption. In 1927, a fourth island, Anak Krakatau, or "Child of Krakatoa", emerged from the caldera formed in 1883. There has been new eruptive activity since the late 20th century, with a large collapse causing a deadly tsunami in December 2018. The most notable eruptions of Krakatoa culminated in a series of massive explosions over 26–27 August 1883, which were among the most violent volcanic events in recorded history.

On April 8, 1839, Ross was given orders to command an expedition to Antarctica for the purposes of “magnetic research and geographical discovery”. Between September 1839 and September 1843, it commanded HMS Erebus on his own Antarctic expedition and charted much of the continent's coastline. En route to the Southern Ocean, Ross established magnetic measurement stations in St. Helena, Cape Town, and Kerguelen before arriving in Hobart in early 1840. The spedition crossed the Antarctic Circle on January 1, 1841. The expedition's main aim was to find the position of the South Magnetic Pole. While Ross failed to reach the pole, he was able to determine its location. Ross's ships arrived back in England on September 4, 1843.

Iguazu Falls (in Spanish, Cataratas del Iguazú; in Guarani, Chororõ Yguasu; in Portuguese, Cataratas do Iguaçu), formed by the Iguazu River on the border of the Argentine province of Misiones and the Brazilian state of Paraná, are the largest in the world. Most of the falls (80%) are on the Argentine side, and at its confluence with the San Antonio River, the Iguazu River serves as the border between Argentina and Brazil. The falls have different heights; the largest is 82 m (269 ft). Its average flow is 1,756 m3 per second (62,010 ft3/s). The first European to register the existence of the falls was the Spanish Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca in 1542, who called them “Saltos de Santa María”; However, the first to spot them had been Aleixo García, a castaway from the expedition of Juan Díaz de Solís, in 1524, when he crossed that region in search of the Sierra de la Plata. In 1934 the Argentine government established the Iguazú National Park, which was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1984.

The Confederation Bridge (French: Pont de la Confédération) is a box girder bridge carrying the Trans-Canada Highway across the Abegweit Passage of the Northumberland Strait, linking the province of Prince Edward Island with the province of New Brunswick on the mainland. Opened May 31, 1997, the 12.9-kilometre (8.0 mi) bridge is Canada's longest bridge and the world's longest bridge over ice-covered water. Construction took place from October 1993 to May 1997. In April 2022, the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island voted unanimously in favor of renaming the bridge to "Epekwitk Crossing", whereas Epekwitk is the traditional Mi'kmaq name for Prince Edward Island.

Henry Morton Stanley (born John Rowlands; 28 January 1841 – 10 May 1904) was a Welsh explorer, journalist, soldier, colonial administrator, author and politician who was famous for his exploration of Central Africa and his search for missionary and explorer David Livingstone. Besides his discovery of Livingstone, he is mainly known for his search for the sources of the Nile and Congo rivers, the work he undertook as an agent of King Leopold II of the Belgians which enabled the occupation of the Congo Basin region. He is recognized for his important contributions to Western knowledge of the geography of Central Africa and for his resolute opposition to the slave trade in East Africa.
