Momotombo is a stratovolcano on the shores of Xolotlán Lake. The mountain, very symmetrical, has a height of 1,297 m (4,255 ft) and its shape is a symbol of Nicaragua. An eruption in 1610 forced inhabitants of the Spanish city of León to relocate about 48 km (30 mi) west; the ruins of this city are preserved at León Viejo (Old León). There is news that previously, in 1522, it had already erupted. It also erupted in 1764, 1870, 1886, 1905, and most recently November 30, 2015. It is a relatively young volcano, about 4,500 years old. The steam from the volcano is used to generate electricity through the an geothermal plant facilities.
