Currently, Carson Valley is included in the Nevada Micropolitan Statistical Area, within Douglas County. In 1851, the town of Genoa, situated within the Carson River Valley, approximately 68 km (42 mi) south of Reno, was the first permanent settlement in Nevada by Mormon traders selling goods to settlers on their way to California. The settlement originated as a trading post called Mormon Station. In 1856, Orson Hyde changed the name of the community to Genoa, after the Italian city. Genoa served as the first capital of the Nevada Territory in 1861, until it was moved that year to Carson City. Nevada's first newspaper, the Territorial Enterprise, was founded in Genoa in 1858, but moved to Virginia City in 1860. Douglas County is located in western Nevada and extends from Carson Valley to the Sierra Nevada.

Shiprock (Navajo: Tsé Bitʼaʼí, "winged rock") is a monadnock (volcanic breccia and minette) aged 27 million years, rising nearly 482.5 m (1,583 ft) above the high-desert plain of the Navajo Nation in San Juan County, New Mexico. Its peak elevation is 2,187.5 m (7,177 ft) above sea level. It is about 17.30 km (10.75 mi) southwest of the town of Shiprock, which is named for the peak. The formation is in the Four Corners region and plays a significant role in Navajo religion, myth, and tradition. It is located in the center of the area occupied by the Ancient Pueblo People. In 1975, Shiprock was designated as a National Natural Landmark by the National Park Service. The first ascent was in 1939, by a Sierra Club team. The idea of climbing Shiprock is repugnant to many Navajo people: climbing has been illegal since 1970. The name "Ship Rock" in english dates from the 1870s.

The Grand Canyon (Hopi: Öngtupqa; Yavapai: Wi:kaʼi:la; Navajo: Bidááʼ Haʼaztʼiʼ TsékoohSouthern Paiute language: Paxa’uipi; Spanish: Gran Cañón or Gran Cañón del Colorado) is a steep-sided canyon carved by the Colorado River in Arizona. It is 446 km (277 mi) long, up to 29 km (18 mi) wide and attains a depth of over a mile (1,857 m or 6,093 ft). The canyon and adjacent rim are contained within Grand Canyon National Park, the Kaibab National Forest, Grand Canyon–Parashant National Monument, the Hualapai Indian Reservation, the Havasupai Indian Reservation and the Navajo Nation. The Grand Canyon is a river valley in the Colorado Plateau that exposes uplifted Proterozoic and Paleozoic strata. Between 100,000 and 3 million years ago, volcanic activity deposited ash and lava over the area which at times completely obstructed the river. These volcanic rocks are the youngest in the canyon. The first European known to have viewed the Grand Canyon was García López de Cárdenas from Spain, who arrived in 1540. James Ohio Pattie, along with a group of American trappers and mountain men, may have been the next European to reach the canyon, in 1826.

Its surface area is 5.49 km2 (2.12 sq mi), and its maximum height is 179.5 m (589 ft). Due to this location, Corregidor has historically been fortified with coastal artillery batteries to defend the entrance of Manila Bay and Manila itself from attacks by enemy warships. During World War II, the island played an important role during the invasion and liberation of the Philippines from the Imperial Japanese Army. The island was heavily bombarded during the later part of the war, where the ruins serve as a military memorial to American, Filipino, and Japanese soldiers who served and lost their lives on the battlefield.

West Virginia was admitted to the Union on June 20, 1863. It was the only state that was formed by separating from a confederate state. The state legislature abolished slavery in the state and, at the same time, ratified the Thirteenth Amendment abolishing slavery nationwide on February 3, 1865.
The total area of the State is 62,755 km2 (24,230 sq mi). Its population, in 2019, was 1,792,147 inhabitants.

The Oregon Trail was a 2,170-mile (3,490 km) east-west, large-wheeled wagon route and emigrant trail in the United States that connected the Missouri River to valleys in Oregon. From the early to mid-1830s (and particularly through the years 1846–1869) the Oregon Trail and its many offshoots were used by about 400,000 settlers, farmers, miners, ranchers, missioners and business owners and their families. Use of the trail declined as the first transcontinental railroad was completed in 1869. The first overland route through what is now the United States was mapped by the Lewis and Clark Expedition between 1804 and 1806. Lewis and Clark initially believed they had found a practical overland route to the west coast; however, the two passes they encountered through the Rocky Mountains proved too difficult for the prairie schooner cars to traverse.

Yellowstone National Park, with an area of 3468.4 sq mi (8,983.2 km²), occupies territories of the states of Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. It was the first national park to be established in the United States, in 1872. The relief of the park includes lakes, canyons, rivers and mountain ranges, and also the Yellowstone caldera, the largest supervolcano in the American continent, currently inactive, but has erupted several times in the last two million years. Thanks to its continuous volcanic activity, Yellowstone is also home to half of the world's geysers and hydrothermal vents. Old Faithful geyser, located in Teton County (Wyoming), received this name in 1870. The eruptions, which last from one and a half to five minutes, can release between 3,700 and 8,400 US gallons (14,000 to 32,000 L) of water boiling at a height of 106 to 185 ft (32 to 56 m). The intervals between eruptions can vary from 60 to 110 minutes.

Crater Lake is a crater lake in south-central Oregon State in the western United States. It is the main feature of Crater Lake National Park and is famous for its deep blue color and water clarity. The lake partly fills a nearly 2,148-foot-deep (655 m) caldera that was formed around 7,700 (± 150) years ago by the collapse of the volcano Mount Mazama. There are no rivers flowing into or out of the lake; the evaporation is compensated for by rain and snowfall at a rate such that the total amount of water is replaced every 250 years. The lake is 5 by 6 miles (8.0 by 9.7 km) across, with a caldera rim ranging in elevation from 7,000 to 8,000 feet (2,100 to 2,400 m) and an average lake depth of 1,148 feet (350 m). The lake's maximum depth has been measured at 1,949 feet (594 m), which fluctuates slightly as the weather changes. Crater Lake features two small islands. Wizard Island, located near the western shore of the lake, is a cinder cone approximately 316 acres (128 ha) in size. Phantom Ship, a natural rock pillar, is located near the southern shore.
In June 1853, John Wesley Hillman became the first non-Native American explorer to report sighting the lake he named the “Deep Blue Lake”. The lake was renamed at least three times, as Blue Lake, Lake Majesty, and finally Crater Lake.

The Great Smoky Mountains are part of the Appalachian Mountains. Its highest peak is the Clingmans Dome, with a height of 2,025 m (6,643 ft); they stretch along the Tennessee-North Carolina border in the southeastern United States. On June 15, 1934, President Franklin Roosevelt signed legislation establishing the Great Smoky Mountains National Park: the park covers 2,114.15 km2 (816.28 sq mi) and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Native Americans probably hunted in those mountains 14,000 years ago. Hernandode Soto and Juan Pardo are supposed to have been the first Europeans to visit the Smokies, in 1540 and 1567 respectively. Europeans began to explore the region in the mid-18th century. After the French and Indian War (1754-63), tensions developed between the native Cherokee and the arriving white explorers. In the early 1800s, the Cherokee ceded control of the Smokies to the US government.
