Zion
National Park is located in the southwest of the state of Utah, near the town
of Springdale. It was established on November 19, 1919 and its area is 146,597
acres (229,058 sq mi; 593.26 km2). It is characterized primarily by
the 229 sq mi (590 km2) Zion Canyon, which is 15 mi (24 km) long and
up to 2,640 ft (800 m) deep. The highest point in the park is Horse Ranch Mountain,
8,733 ft (2,662 m) high.
Among the park’s mountains is the Great White Throne, which towers over Zion
Canyon as high as 6,747 ft (2,056 m). It is often used as a symbol of Zion
National Park.
