The Cahora Bassa dam is located in western Mozambique. It is one of the two main dams on the Zambezi River (the other is Kariba). It was built between 1969 and 1974, when Mozambique was still a Portuguese colony. This dam is used to convert energy from the Zambezi River into electricity by spinning turbines. That energy is then sent to cities, farms and mines in South Africa. The dam forms Lake Cahora Bassa. This dam is the largest hydroelectric plant in southern Africa and the most efficient power generation plant in Mozambique: it is 171 m (561 ft) high by 303 m (994 ft) wide at the ridge. The length of the lake is about 250 km (160 mi) and its width, 38 km (24 mi), and it floods an area of 2,700 km2 (1,000 sq mi); its average depth of 20.9 m (69 ft). In this way, an attempt was made to end the existing polarization between the coastal region around Caracas and the rest of Venezuela. Later, by a decree of January 14, 1980, the administrative regions of Venezuela were set at 9, according to the geographical, economic and cultural similarities of the states integrated in them.

Paraguay and Bolivia faced each other in the so-called Chaco War (Guerra del Chaco; Cháko Ñorairõ in Guaraní) from September 9, 1932 to June 12, 1935, due to the dispute over the northern territory of the semi-desert region of the Gran Chaco or Chaco Boreal (Bolivian Chaco for Bolivia), where it was presumed that there were large oil deposits, a presumption that was later proven false. Finally, the Treaty of Buenos Aires, signed on June 12, 1935, awarded three-quarters of the territory to Paraguay and a quarter to Bolivia, thus ending the war. It was the bloodiest interstate military conflict ever fought in South America during the 20th century, between two of its poorest countries; both had lost territory to neighbors in the wars of the 19th century.

The territory of present-day Belize was part of the Mayan cultural area. The Spanish conquerors explored the region from 1519, they incorporated it into the Crown of Castile and the territory became part of the General Captaincy of Guatemala, but they did not colonize it. In 1716 some British loggers settled in the Belize River region, but initially the British government not considerate the region as a colony, thus respecting the Spanish presence. However, in 1862 Great Britain formally declared the territory a British Crown colony subordinate to Jamaica, and named it British Honduras. In 1949 a People's Committee was created, which demanded independence; in 1973 the colony recovered the name of Belize, and despite Guatemala's claims to the territory, it proclaimed its independence on September 21, 1981. This has led to several military clashes. The first war between Pakistan and India broke out in October 1947 and ended in July 1949 after the mediation of the United Nations. In 1965 and 1999 there were other clashes. Both India and Pakistan claim the territory (this stamp is proof of this), and the People's Republic of China also intends to incorporate the northeastern zone. Numerous attempts to pacify the area have failed.

In the 1870s European exploration of the Congo Basin was carried out, first led by Henry Morton Stanley under the sponsorship of Leopold II of Belgium. Leopold formally acquired rights to the Congo territory at the Berlin Conference in 1885 and declared the land his private property, naming it the Congo Free State. During the Free State, his colonial military unit, the Force Publique, forced the local population to produce rubber. From 1885 to 1908, millions of the Congolese people died as a consequence of disease and exploitation. In 1908, Leopold, despite his initial reluctance, ceded the so-called Free State to Belgium, thus it became known as the Belgian Congo.
Congo achieved independence from Belgium on 30 June 1960 under the name Republic of the Congo.
