The 138 km2 (86,000 sq miles), mountainous and ethnically diverse region of Kashmir, located northwest of the Indian subcontinent, is a disputed territory between Pakistan, India and the People's Republic of China, its borders have been in conflict since 1947, and they are not yet defined. This has led to several military clashes. The first war between Pakistan and India broke out in October 1947 and ended in July 1949 after the mediation of the United Nations. In 1965 and 1999 there were other clashes. Both India and Pakistan claim the territory (this stamp is proof of this), and the People's Republic of China also intends to incorporate the northeastern zone. Numerous attempts to pacify the area have failed.
