The Dardanelles Strait (in Turkish, Çanakkale Boğazı), the Hellespont (Ἑλλήσποντος) of classical Greece, is a strait located in Turkey, between the Gallipoli peninsula (in Turkish, Gelibolu) and Anatolia. It connects the Aegean Sea with the Sea of Marmara. It measures 61 km (37.90 mi) in length, between 1.6 and 6.5 km (99.4 and 4 mi) wide, and has an average depth of about 50 m (164 ft). Historically, it has had a strategic role since ancient times. George Bass, British surgeon, navigator and explorer, was born in Aswarby (Lincolnshire) on January 30, 1771 and disappeared at sea, off the coast of eastern Australia, in February 1803. Enlisted in the Royal Navy as a surgeon, he arrived in Sydney (New South Wales) on September 7, 1795. In October of the same year he set sail accompanied by Matthew Flinders, to explore coasts beyond those discovered by the colonists, the following year he explored more remote areas and in 1797 he came with Flinders to the strait that bears his name, between South Australia and present-day Tasmania, which he circumnavigated in 1798 and confirmed that it was an island. In January 1803 he undertook a journey from Sydney to New Zealand to locate fishing areas, but nothing was heard from him again.

The Turks and Caicos Islands are a British Overseas Territory consisting of the larger Caicos Islands and smaller Turks Islands, two groups of tropical islands in the Lucayan Archipelago of the Atlantic Ocean. The first inhabitants of the islands were the Arawakan-speaking Taíno people, who most likely crossed over from Hispaniola some time from AD 500 to 800. Together with Taíno who migrated from Cuba to the southern Bahamas around the same time, these people developed as the Lucayan. Some sources state that Christopher Columbus saw the islands on his voyage to the Americas in 1492. However other sources state that it is more likely that Spanish conquistador Juan Ponce de León was the first European in Turks and Caicos, in 1512. In 1799, both the Turks and the Caicos island groups were annexed by Britain as part of the Bahamas.
The Turks Islands are separated from the Caicos Islands by Turks Island Passage, which is more than 2,200 m (7,200 ft) deep.
