Leirvík
is a town on the east coast of Eysturoy
Island, on the shores of the Leirvíksfjørður
strait. It was an important regional ferry harbor until April 2006, when the
6.2 km (3.85 mi) long Nordoy tunnel to Klaksvík was opened. In
2022, the town had a population of 1,048. Archaeological excavations show that
Leirvík was settled by the Vikings in the 9th century. The local economy is
based on a shipyard and, above all, on fishing. Also visible on the stamp is
the 612 m (2,008 ft) Sigatindur mountain.
