In 1979, the city of Dubrovnik was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in recognition of its outstanding medieval architecture and fortified old town. In 1991, during the Croatian War of Independence, Dubrovnik was besieged by the Yugoslav People's Army for seven months and suffered significant damage from shelling. After undergoing repair and restoration works in the 1990s and early 2000s, it re-emerged as one of the Mediterranean's top tourist destinations, as well as a popular filming location. Dubrovnik has its own international airport, located approximately 20 km (12 mi) southeast of Dubrovnik city centre, near Čilipi.

Despite the heavy losses suffered, the Battle of Sutjeska has been considered by Yugoslav historiography as one of the greatest victories in its history. It was also the last major joint German-Italian operation against the partisans.

It forms part of the boundary between Serbia (to the south) and Romania (north). In the broad sense it encompasses a route of 134 km (83 mi); in the narrow sense it only encompasses the last barrier on this route, just beyond the Romanian city of Orșova, that currently contains two hydroelectric dams, with two power stations. At this point in the Danube, the river separates the southern Carpathian Mountains from the northwestern foothills of the Balkan Mountains. The Romanian side of the gorge constitutes the Iron Gates Natural Park (Parcul Natural Porțile de Fier), whereas the Serbian part constitutes the Đerdap National Park (Национални парк Ђердап / Nacionalni park Đerdap). A wider protected area on the Serbian side was declared the UNESCO global geopark in July 2020.

Omiš (Almissa, in Latin and Italian) is a town of Dalmatia, of about 6,600 inhabitants, located on the coast of the Adriatic Sea and, exactly, at the mouth of the Cetina river, 25 km (15.5 mi) southeast of the city of Split. It is protected by the eastern foothills of the Mosor Mountain, belonging to Dinaric Alps, on whose steep rocky slopes the fortress of Mirabella was built. The town, of very ancient origins, is historically known for having been a refuge for pirates, who were characterized by their attacks against the papal galleys and the merchant ships of the powerful Venice, Dubrovnik, Kotor and Split, which was the reason for frequent wars and successive agreements, which often ended with the payment of tributes to Omiš to ensure peaceful navigation. Currently the town and its surroundings are an important tourist destination.
