Plitvice
Lakes National Park (Croatian: Nacionalni park Plitvička jezera),
founded in 1949, in 1979 was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list, due
to its outstanding and picturesque series of tufa lakes connected by
waterfalls. The protected area extends over 296.85 km2 (114.61sq
mi), and is located in the mountainous karst area of central Croatia, at the
border to Bosnia and Herzegovina; a 90% is part of Lika-Senj County, and
the remaining 10% is part of Karlovac County. The
highest waterfall is the Large
Waterfall (Veliki slap), 78 m (256 ft) high.
