Omiš
(Almissa, in Latin and Italian) is a town of Dalmatia, of about 6,600
inhabitants, located on the coast of the Adriatic Sea and, exactly, at the
mouth of the Cetina river,
25 km (15.5 mi) southeast of the city of Split. It is protected by the eastern
foothills of the Mosor Mountain,
belonging to Dinaric Alps, on whose steep rocky slopes the fortress of Mirabella
was built. The town, of very ancient origins, is historically known for having
been a refuge for pirates, who were characterized by their attacks against the
papal galleys and the merchant ships of the powerful Venice, Dubrovnik, Kotor
and Split, which was the reason for frequent wars and successive agreements,
which often ended with the payment of tributes to Omiš to ensure peaceful
navigation. Currently the town and its surroundings are an important tourist
destination.
