Saint George's Town, in northern Bermuda, settled in 1612, is the first permanent English (and later British) settlement in America. It was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 2000. The set of its numerous fortifications, some of which are still preserved, illustrate the development of English military engineering between the seventeenth and twentieth centuries, with the necessary adaptations for development of artillery in this period.
