Paraguay and Bolivia faced each other in the so-called Chaco War (Guerra del Chaco; Cháko Ñorairõ in Guaraní) from September 9, 1932 to June 12, 1935, due to the dispute over the northern territory of the semi-desert region of the Gran Chaco or Chaco Boreal (Bolivian Chaco for Bolivia), where it was presumed that there were large oil deposits, a presumption that was later proven false. Finally, the Treaty of Buenos Aires, signed on June 12, 1935, awarded three-quarters of the territory to Paraguay and a quarter to Bolivia, thus ending the war. It was the bloodiest interstate military conflict ever fought in South America during the 20th century, between two of its poorest countries; both had lost territory to neighbors in the wars of the 19th century.
