The small archipelago of Öregrund is a group of islands belonging to the
municipality of Östhammar, very close to the coast of the county of Uppsala. It
is part of the coastal area of Roslagen. The largest of the islands seen on the
stamp is Gräsö, 93.26 km2 (36.01 sq mi). Its length is 30 km (18.64
mi) and its average width is 6 km (3.73 mi). The map reproduced on the stamp
was drawn by Johan Nordenancher in 1800.
Johan Månsson (? -1659), captain of the Swedish Admiralty and in charge of
training the Crown pilots, designed in 1644 the first Swedish nautical chart,
known as Een siö-book som aconhåller om siöfarten i Östersiön, published in 1645.
