West
Virginia became a state after the Wheeling Conventions
of 1861, at the beginning of the American Civil War.
Delegates from the unionist counties of northwestern Virginia decided to secede
from Virginia, which also
included secessionist counties in the new state. West Virginia was admitted to
the Union on June 20, 1863. It was the only state that was formed by separating
from a confederate state. The state legislature abolished slavery in the state
and, at the same time, ratified the Thirteenth
Amendment abolishing slavery nationwide on February 3, 1865.
The total area of the State is 62,755 km2 (24,230 sq mi). Its
population, in 2019, was 1,792,147 inhabitants.
