Bornholm
(Bornholmsk: Borrinjholm) is a Danish island in the Baltic Sea, to the
east of the rest of Denmark, south of Sweden, northeast of Germany and north of
Poland. Occupying an area of 588.36 km2 (227.17 sq mi), the island
had a total population of 39,545 on January 1, 2022. The island is known as klippeøen
(‘Rock Island’) because of its geology, which consists of granite, except along
the southern coast. Its largest settlement is Rønne. Many inhabitants
speak the Bornholmsk
dialect, which is officially a dialect of Danish. Most inhabitants are
members of the Lutheran
Church of Denmark (Folkekirken).
