Sardinia (in Italian, Sardegna; in Sardinian, Sardìgna or Sardìnnia; in Catalan, Sardenya), is an island located south of Corsica, from which it is separated by the Strait of Bonifacio, between the seas of Sardinia (to the west) and Tyrrhenian (to the east), both belonging to the Mediterranean Sea. It has an area of 24,100 km2 (9,305 sq mi) and in 2020 its population was just over 1,600,000 inhabitants. It is an autonomous region of the Italian State, divided into four provinces (Nuoro, Oristano, Sassari and Sud Sardegna) and a metropolitan city (Cagliari, capital of the Region). It has two official languages: Italian and Sardinian (with its dialect variants), and a variant of Catalan in Alghero (l’Alguer). The island is predominantly mountainous, with the Gennargentu range standing out in its center, with Punta La Marmora, at 1,834 m (6,017 ft), as the highest peak. In front of its coasts there are numerous islands and islets; the largest are Sant’Antioco (109 km², 42 sq mi), Asinara (52 km², 20 sq mi), San Pietro (50 km², 19.3 sq mi), La Maddalena (20 km², 7.7 sq mi) and Caprera (16 km², 6.18 sq mi).
