Gran
Paradiso National Park (Italian: Parco nazionale del Gran Paradiso;
French; Parc national du Grand Paradis), is located in the Graian Alps, between the Aosta Valley and Piedmont regions, and borders
France in its western part. The park is named after Gran Paradiso mountain,
which is located in the park; it is contiguous with the French Vanoise National
Park. The land the park, created on December 3, 1922, encompasses was
initially protected in order to protect the Alpine ibex from poachers.
Its area is 703 km2 (272 sq mi) of alpine terrain. 9.5% of the park's surface
area is occupied by 57 glaciers.
