The Brandberg (in Damara language, Dâures, 'burning mountain'; in Otjiherero language, Omukuruvaro, 'mountain of the Gods') is Namibia's highest mountain massif, located in the northwestern Namib Desert, near the coast, and covers an area of some 650 km2 (250 sq mi). Its highest point is the Königstein, standing at 2,573 m (8,442 ft) above sea level. The Brandberg name is Afrikaans, Dutch, and German for "Burning Mountain", which comes from its brilliant color sometimes seen in the setting sun, by the dominant plutonic rock. The Brandberg is a spiritual site of great importance to the Bushman tribes. The Needle (in Afrikaans, Die Nadel), at over 2,000 m (6,560 ft), is one of the rocky peaks of Upper Brandberg.
