Construction of the Matala Dam and Hydroelectric Power Station ended in 1954, on the Kunene River, in Huíla province, at an elevation of approximately 1300 m (4,065 ft) above sea level. After its inauguration, it was renamed Salazar Dam (in honor of the Portuguese dictator). It is crossed by a bridge measuring 929 m (3,048 ft) in length whit two decks, one for cars and the other for trains.
