The Almsee is a mountain lake in Upper Austria, belonging to the municipality of Grünau im Almtal, at the northern foot of the Dead Mountains (Totes Gebirge), in the northern eastern Pre-Alps. It is located 589 m (1932 ft) above sea level. Its length is 2.3 km (1.43 mi), its maximum width is 700 m (2,296 ft), and its average depth is 2.5 m (8.20 ft). It has a surface area of 850,000 m2 (9,149,323 sq ft). Since 1965 it has been protected as a nature reserve.
