In 1950,
some 110,000 people, including a large number of soldiers, were summoned to
build the first highways that linked Tibet with the rest of the People's
Republic of China. They had rudimentary equipment and faced many dangers: until
the work was completed, more than 4,000 workers lost their lives. The
Qinghai-Tibet (1937 km, 1203 mi) and Sichuan-Tibet (2142 km, 1331 mi) highways
were opened to traffic in 1954: they are the highest-altitude asphalt roads in
the world and the first true communication routes with Tibet.
