The Higher Geographic Council (Consejo Superior Geográfico) was created in 1923 by the board of General Miguel Primo de Rivera to establish the cartographic needs of the country and allocate resources. It was a military body, dependent on the Ministry of War, chaired by the second chief of the Central General Staff. In October 1931 it was suppressed by the government of the Spanish Republic, and restored in 1942 by the regime of General Franco. Currently, as the governing body of the National Cartographic System (Sistema Cartográfico Nacional), it depends on technical ministries (Fomento, Transportes or with the name given by each government).
