Vanuatu agreed to full independence from the Franco-British condominium of the New Hebrides on July 30, 1980, with Walter Liñi as Prime Minister. The Republic of Vanuatu joined the United Nations in 1981, and the Non-Aligned Movement in 1983. The country's capital is Port Vila, on the island of Vaté (Efate).
