The Rock of Solutré is a limestone cliff overlooking the town of Solutré-Pouilly, 8 km (5 mi) west of the city of Mâcon. Its summit is 493 m (1,617 ft) above sea level. It is an emblematic site protected by the law of classified sites with the category of Grand Site de France. It is interesting as a rare geological phenomenon in the region and for hosting one of the richest prehistoric sites in Europe in bones and lithic remains of a Paleolithic culture that occupied it for 55,000 years. Archaeological excavations began in 1866.
