Martinique belongs to the Windward Islands, in the Lesser Antilles. Its total area is 1,128 km2 (436 sq mi), its length is 65 km (40 mi) and its maximum width is 27 km (17 mi). The first European navigator to land on it was Christopher Columbus during his fourth voyage, on June 15, 1502, who took possession of the island on behalf of the Crown of Castile. However, it had already been discovered (without stopping there) by Alonso de Ojeda during his expedition of 1499-1500. It also appears on Juan de la Cosa’s map in 1500 and on Alberto Cantino’s map, in 1502. But, except on three occasions when it has been briefly occupied by other nations, the island has remained under French rule since its colonization in 1635. After a parliamentary debate, March 19, 1946, the island became a French overseas department, and from the following year it stopped issuing its own stamps and uses the stamps of France.
