On March 4, 1983, Pope John Paul II visited briefly Nicaragua for 11 hours. He said two mass masses, one in the city of León and the other in Managua. It was a very tense visit, of evident confrontation with the Sandinista revolutionary regime, at the beginning of which he publicly rebuked the priest and poet Ernesto Cardenal, attached to liberation theology, not accepted by the Catholic Church, to whom he denied the blessing. Cardenal was at that time Minister of Culture of Nicaragua.
