Spannort
is a very irregularly shaped mountain in the Uri Canton Alps, made up of two
peaks: the Gross Spannort, 3198 m (10,492 ft), and the Chli Spannort, 3,140 m
(10,300 ft). The Gross Spannort is almost entirely surrounded by glaciers, the
largest being Glatt Finn. The Gross Spannort was first climbed in 1867 by a
group of British mountaineers. On the night of December 28, 1961, a landslide occurred
at Chli Spannort, from which more than a million m³ of rock fell.
