The
Portuguese colony of Timor occupied the eastern part of the island, a territory
that currently corresponds to the Republic of East Timor (Timor-Leste).
Portugal officially established the colony in 1596 and maintained it until it
was occupied by the Indonesian army on December 7, 1975. The new republic
gained independence on May 20, 2002.
Between 1702 and 1894 the monetary unit of the colony was the thousand reis
(mil reis), which were replaced by the petaca until in 1959 it was introduced
the Portuguese Timorese escudo.
