The
National Topography Directorate (Dirección Nacional de Topografía) of the
Ministry of Transportation and Public Works of Uruguay, located in Montevideo,
was founded on December 3, 1831 with the creation of a Topographic Commission
that was to draw up the first topographic chart of the country and with other
objectives in the medium and long term, including carrying out studies, works
and reports on surveying for the State, producing and maintaining the basic
cartography of the entire country and preserving, guarding and managing basic
geographic data of the national territory. From the foundation, a National Archive
of Measurement Plans was established.
