Plitvice Lakes National Park (in Croatian: Nacionalni park Plitvička jezera, colloquially Plitvice), founded on April 8, 1949, is one of the oldest and largest national parks in Croatia. In 1979 it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage register. It is located in the mountainous karst area of central Croatia, at the border to Bosnia and Herzegovina. The protected area extends over 296.85 km2 (11461.44 sq mi). The park is characterized by its lakes and waterfalls: sixteen lakes can be seen from the surface. These lakes are a result of the confluence of several small rivers and subterranean karst rivers. The difference in altitude within the park area ranges from 912 m (2,992 ft) to 367 m (1,204 ft). The highest summit is Seliški vrh, at 1,279 m (4,196 ft).
