The
Kornati Archipelago is
located in central Dalmatia. In 1980 the Kornati Islands National Park (in
Croatian, Nacionalni Park Kornati) was established, which includes 89 of
the 140 islands, islets and reefs of the archipelago, for its protection and
that of its marine environment. The area covered by the park mostly coincides
with Donji Kornati, which includes Kornat Island and the surrounding islets,
and has a total area of about 220 km2 (85 sq mi). Most of the land
on the islands is karst limestone that, in the distant geological past, arose
from sediments from the sea.
