Chao Phraya River (in Thai, แม่น้ำ เจ้าพระยา) is the longest and mightiest river in Thailand. It is 372 km (231 mi) long, begins in the north of the country and empties into the Gulf of Thailand, on the southern outskirts of the city of Bangkok. It is an important route for river transport and irrigates part of a highly productive agricultural valley; rice cultivation is very important in its delta. Its name, however, is applied only to the lower section, which begins at the confluence of the Nan (740 km, 460 mi) and Ping (658 km, 409 mi) rivers, in Nakhon Sawan Province, where several cities settle.
