Mount Irvine Bay, in the northwest of Tobago island, has become a major beach tourist destination, with numerous hotels and accommodations. The beach, about 800 m (half a mile) long, is divided into two parts by rocks that are a natural habitat for crabs. The extreme north is very suitable for windsurfing. There is also one of the most important golf courses in the Caribbean, established in 1968. Formerly there were mainly coconut and sugar cane plantations there.
