Lê
Lợi (Lam Son, Thon Hoa Province, c. September 10, 1384 - September 5, 1433) who
received the nickname Lam Sơn động chủ (Lord of Lam Son) and whose official
title was Bình Định vương (Prince of Pacification), was a Vietnamese
politician, rebel leader, and later monarch of the restored kingdom of Đại Việt,
and founder of the second Lê dynasty after Đại Việt was conquered in 1407 and
briefly incorporated into the Ming Empire of China. In
1418, Lê Lợi and his followers took up arms against the Ming laws and nine
years later, in October 1427, after the victorious battle of Xương
Giang (remembered on this stamp) they managed to drive the Ming armies out
of Vietnam and liberated the country of Chinese rule. After ten years of war, Đại
Việt regained its status as an independent state, officially recognized by the
Ming Empire. The site of this battle was classified as a Special National
Historic Site in 2020.
