Gaustatoppen (or Gausta) is the highest mountain in the county Vestfold og Telemark. Its height is 1,883 m (6,178 ft) above sea level, and at its top there is a 68 m (223 ft) communications tower. The mountain, 180 km (112 mi) from Oslo, is popular for its excellent ski slopes; inside there is a funicular, built for military purposes between 1954 and 1959, with which you can ascend to near the top. The first recorded ascent was made by geologist Jens Esmark and botanist Christen Smith in August 1810, during a Telemark scientific expedition.
