Murchison Falls National Park is located in northwestern Uganda and stretches from the shores of Lake Albert, around the Victoria Nile, to the Karuma Falls. It was established in 1952 and has an area of 3,893 km2 (1,503 sq mi). The park, along with the adjacent 748 km2 (289 sq mi) of the Bugungu Wildlife Reserve and the 720 km2 (280 sq mi) of the Karuma Wildlife Reserve, forms the Murchison Falls Conservation Area. The first Europeans to visit the area were the explorers John Speke and James Grant, in 1862; Samuel and Florence Baker explored it further between 1863 and 1864. Baker named the falls after the geologist Roderick Murchison, then president of the Royal Geographical Society. The falls are formed by the River Nile and flow through a gorge only 7 m (23 ft) wide before plummeting from a height of 43 m (141 ft).
