The
Dam of Mabubas (Barragem das Mabubas, also known as Barragem Capitão
Teófilo Duarte) is located northeast of the town of Caxito, in the Bengo province, Northwestern
Angola. It is in the course of the Dande (or Dange) river and
forms a large artificial lake known as Albufeira das
Mabubas. It was built to generate hydroelectric power and to supply water
to the city of Luanda,
located about 70 km (44 mi). The construction of the dam began on February 18,
1948, and its first phase entered service in April 1954. The construction of
the second phase ended in May 1957.
