The Juanacatlán Falls (Spanish: Salto de Juanacatlán) are formed by the Río Grande de Santiago, in the Mexican state of Jalisco, between the municipalities of Juanacatlán and El Salto, very close to the city of Guadalajara. Its width is about 160 m (525 ft) in a horseshoe shape, and the water rushes from a height of 20 m (65.6 ft). The flow is highly variable depending on the time of year and rainfall patterns. Since the beginning of the 1980s, the area has suffered severe degradation due to the dumping of industrial and urban waste into the river. Traditionally, these falls are known as “the Niagara of Mexico”.
