The
Finsteraarhorn, 4,274 m (14,022 ft) above sea level, is a mountain lying on the
border between the cantons of Bern and Valais. It is the highest
mountain of the Bernese
Alps and the most prominent peak of Switzerland. In 2001 the whole massif
and surrounding glaciers were designated by UNESCO as part of the Jungfrau-Aletsch World Heritage
Site. To its west lies the Fiescher Glacier, the
second longest in the Alps. The first ascent was for a long time a
controversial matter, but it is considered that the first people to reach the
top, on August 10, 1829, were two guides on an expedition organized by Franz Joseph Hugi,
who had failed in his attempt a year before.
