Chilean
mountaineers Claudio
Lucero, Gastón Oyarzún, Iván Vigoroux, Jorge Bassa, Jorge Quintero, Héctor
Zúñiga, Rubén Lamilla, Nelson Muñoz and Claudio Gálvez participated in the
first Chilean expedition to the Himalayas, and stated that on June 9, 1979 they
reached the top of Mount Gasherbrum II. However, some specialists questioned
the authenticity of this feat, which has been called into question.
Mount Gasherbrum II (Urdu, گاشر برم -2; Chinese, 加舒尔布鲁 木 山), also known as K4 or Moravi II, is the thirteenth highest mountain on Earth and is located in the Karakoram mountain range (the westernmost sector of the Himalayas), on the border between the Gilgit-Baltistan region, in Pakistan, and the autonomous region of Xinjiang, in China. Its height is 8,034 m (26,358 ft) above sea level. In 1856, Thomas George Montgomerie, a British member of the Royal Engineers, participated in the Great Trigonometric Topography Project expedition in Indian and Pakistani territory, sighted the mountain and named it K4, The first recorded ascent took place on July 7, 1956 by an Austrian expedition formed by Fritz Moravec, Josef Larch and Hans Willenpart.
