Red Lake (Croatian: Crveno jezero) is a sinkhole, formed by the fall of a vault, containing a karst lake next to the town of Imotski, Dalmatia, near the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is known for its many remarkably tall caves and cliffs, reaching over 241 m (791 ft) above normal water level and continuing below water level. The total explored depth of this sinkhole is approximately 530 m (1,739 ft) with a volume of some 25 to 30 million cubic meters, making it the third largest sinkhole in the world. The water leaves the basin through underground waterways that descend below the level of the lake bottom. The deepest known point in the lake is 4 meters below sea level. The sinkhole is named after the reddish-brown color of the surrounding cliffs, colored by iron oxides.
