South Georgia (Spanish: San Pedro) is an island in the southern Atlantic Ocean that is part of the British Overseas Territory of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. The main settlement is Grytviken. Its area is 3,528 km2 (1,362 sq mi), it has a length of 167.4 km (104 mi) and a width of 1.4 to 37 km (0.9 to 23 mi). It was sighted on June 28 or 29, 1756 (coinciding with Saint Peter day) by a Spanish commercial ship called León that operated in Saint-Malo. On January 17, 1775, Captain James Cook landed there, took possession of the island on behalf of the British Admiralty and named it the Island of Georgia in honor of King George III. Between 1909 and 1964, several whaling stations were active on the island.
Stamp
issued to contribute economically to the reconstruction after the Falklands War between
Argentina (which claimed the archipelago as Islas Malvinas) and the United
Kingdom, which was fought between April 2 and June 14, 1982 and ended with the
victory of the British trops.
