The Adomi Bridge is a steel trellis arch suspension bridge that spans the Volta River in Atimpoku, about 87 km (54 miles) northeast of Accra. It is the first permanent bridge to span the Volta River, and the longest suspension bridge in Ghana. It provides the main road passage between the Eastern Region and the Volta Region of the country. It was inaugurated on January 26, 1957 by Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana's first president, as the Volta Bridge: construction work had started in March 1955. Its total length is 334 m (1,096 ft) and its width is 11.9 m (39 ft). The structure was revised and rehabilitated in 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2014-2015.
